The Woman's Leader
Description
An account of the resource
This journal initially joined with The Common Cause (1909-1920) and was associated with the National Union of Societies for Equal Citizenship and later the National Union of Townswomen’s Guilds. A journal of politics and social reform that advocates for "a real equality of liberties, status, and opportunities between men and women."

Doughan states that, despite its sober appearance The Woman's Leader was the most substantial and vigorous feminist periodical of the 1920s, campaigning for equal franchise, abolition of the marriage bar, equal knowledge of birth control, equal pay, and may other feminist issues. It also provided a forum for feminist of disparate tendencies. Its own line tended to be “liberal” feminist, although it also found itself on the same side as at least the women of the Labour Party (of which it could be highly critical, too). Regular contributors included Mary Stocks, Eva Hubback, and Eleanor Rathbone.

First published in 1906, this journal was originally known as Jus Suffragii: The Monthly Organ of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance. After February 1930 it became The International Women's News and is still being published today.

Published in English, with numerous articles in French, the journal contained detailed reports of suffrage and general feminist activity in a large number of countries. Very internationalist and “progressive” in outlook, and reflects feminist peace efforts in World War I. (For further information see Oldfield 1984). The Latin title means “the right to vote.”

Description
An account of the resource
Doughan states that it is effectively a NUWSS attempt to provide a woman-oriented equivalent of such “mainstream” literarly-intellectual magazines as the Nineteenth Century, Contemporary Review, etc. It acted as a forum for serious feminist discussion at greater length and higher intellectual level than was possible in the suffrage campaign papers.

The periodical also had many distinguished contributors, including Millicient Fawcett, Cecily Hamilton, Mary Lowndes, John Galsworthy, and George Bernard Shaw. It consisted entirely of long articles and reviews, the latter of which, Doughan notes, are of particular interest.
